Visual Terrain Classification For Legged Robots Paul Filitchkin Recent work in terrain classification has relied largely on 3D sensing methods and color based classification. We present an approach that works with a single, compact camera and maintains high classification rates that are robust to changes in illumination. Terrain is classified using a bag of visual words (BOVW) created from speeded up robust features (SURF) with a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. We present several novel techniques to augment this approach. A gradient descent inspired algorithm is used to adjust the SURF Hessian threshold to reach a nominal feature density. A sliding window technique is also used to classify mixed terrain images with high resolution. We demonstrate that our approach is suitable for small legged robots by performing real-time terrain classification on LittleDog. The classifier is used to select between predetermined gaits for traversing terrain of varying difficulty. Results indicate that real-time classification in the loop is faster than using a single all-terrain gait.

Terrain Classification Using Weakly-Structured Vehicle/Terrain Interaction

We present a new terrain classification technique both for effective, autonomous locomotion over rough, unknown terrains and for the qualitative analysis of terrains for exploration and mapping. Our approach requires a single camera with little processing of visual information. Specifically, we derived a gait bounce measure from visual servoing errors that results from vehicle-terrain interacti...

An Evaluation Methodology for Autonomous Mobile Robots for Planetary Exploration

We report here on a new technique to evaluate autonomous mobile robots built for exploring rugged terrain such as is found on planetary surfaces. The dynamics of both wheeled and legged robots interacting with deformable soil (sand) and obstacles are notoriously complex and nonlinear. This paper introduces a novel statistical methodology for the evaluation of such robots. We report on work in p...

Estimating Jumping Heights of a Small Legged Robot based on Terrain Properties, Control Efforts, and Tactile Sensor Measurements

Conclusion Jumping of legged mobile robots has been a highly motivated research area. When a running robot encounters obstacles comparable to its body height, jumping is one of the most effective ways to overcome them. Also, if the robots can jump over gaps or crevices, the mobility of robots in a wild field would be enhanced drastically. The jumping performance is dependent on the terrain prope...

Slipping and Tripping Reflexes for Bipedal Robots

Slipping and Tripping Re exes for Bipedal Robots Gary N. Boone and Jessica K. Hodgins Abstract|Many robot applications require legged robots to traverse rough or unmodeled terrain. This paper explores strategies that would enable legged robots to respond to two common types of surface contact error: slipping and tripping. Because of the rapid response required and the di culty of sensing uneven...
